Controversy Surrounding Karsten Warholm at Budapest Athletics World Championships

It now looks very likely that the Budapest Athletics World Championships will go down in the history books as the world championship of the pre-schoolers. Let’s just remember the calvary of Bence Halász on Sunday, but here is another story, the case of the Norwegian Karsten Warholm.

The Olympic and two-time world champion in the 400-meter hurdles, as well as the world record holder (45.94 seconds), took the second hurdle – it seemed – irregularly in the semi-finals of the event on Monday. Thus:

In Hungarian: he did not put his left foot over the 91.4 cm (1 yard) high barrier, but beside it, that is, he apparently “cheated”, he did not take the substance according to the rules.

The Italians soon filed a warning demanding Warholm’s expulsion. And why exactly the Italians? Because if Warholm had been disqualified, their compatriot Alessandro Sibilio, who achieved the ninth best time, would have been in the final.

However, the protection of the Italian association, FIDAL, was rejected. Namely on the grounds that it was submitted too late. The jury did not want to exclude one of the biggest figures of the world championship, who can even be expected to topple the world record in the final…

Spiriev Attilathe professional leader of the prominent athletics program of the Hungarian federation – a former excellent 400 meter hurdler – responded to the Index’s inquiry about Warholm’s possible mistake:

“He always does that!”

Then he collected his thoughts and gave a formal reply:

“Karsten Warholm switched from the 400 m flat to the 400 m hurdles relatively late, so it took him some time to develop his correct technique. Today, this has succeeded, but sometimes the old mistakes and habits return. This also happened on Monday. He got too close to the second barrier in the turn and simply didn’t have room to get his left, swinging leg over the barrier, and so from the viewing area it looked like he went around on the outside. Which of course is illegal. Of course, this cannot be done on the later dams, because there they are already close to each other, they form a wall, but at the beginning, in the turn, they are still airily positioned to compensate for the track advantage. However, the Italians’ protection was still rejected because it was administered too late. This is the official version.”

So the world record holder will be there in Wednesday’s final.

Another question is, if it is not about him, but about a “field” hurdler, then he should most likely not be preparing for the final…

Whose field looks like this: Karsten Warholm, Rai Benjamin (American), Roshawn Clarke (Jamaican), Alison Dos Santos (Brazil), Trevor Bassitt (American), Joshua Abuaku (German), Kyron McMaster (British Virgin Islands), Rasmus Mägi (Estonia).
