The Search Unit for Persons Reported as Missing (UBPD) accepted the resignation of lawyer Jairo Corzo, after several organizations representing victims of forced disappearance due to the armed conflict in Colombia rejected his hiring as a technical expert in Magdalena Medio.

The controversy originated from the fact that Corzo, who served as a member of the State security forces, had denigrated, through his social networks, peace signatories or those who have been playing an active role in the current negotiations.

Furthermore, the lawyer would have exalted the positions of recognized spokespersons for public enemies of the peace processes agreed between armed groups and the Government.

The Working Group on Forced Disappearance of the Colombia, Europe, United States Coordination (CCEEU), the Movement of Victims of State Crimes (Movice) and more than 60 other organizations, expressed their concern about these recently known publications that they consider “exhibit publicly demonstrations of resistance and rejection of the same Peace Agreements to which today are entrusted with carrying out tasks related to their implementation.”

The victims and contributors indicated that there is a lack of trust in the work to clarify the whereabouts of missing people in the Magdalena Medio region – credit UBPD

His assignment to a region like Magdalena Medio, they point out: “raises concerns because Mr. Corzo Gómez does not seem to separate himself from the anti-communist fury that led to the disappearance of hundreds of political activists of the Patriotic Union, as evidenced by the disclosure of incriminating information. and stigmatizing in a generic way against this left-wing political party, and in which, whoever spreads these statements claims to be denouncing the UP, as guilty of his murder, defamation not only senseless but absolutely incoherent as the official who also holds status should know. of a lawyer.”

Likewise, they recalled that the populations of this region “were subject to intense genocidal practices of State terrorism, perpetrated jointly between Paramilitary groups and various entities of the State security forces”, in which social organizations were exterminated. , unions, peasants and left-wing political organizations, as well as thousands of militants and political activists from organizations persecuted for their role in social struggles.

Due to the above, the organizations pointed out, it is understood that there is distrust on the part of the victims and those who provide information, that the work of clarifying the whereabouts of missing persons “ends up being entrusted to officials previously linked to security entities that have had an active role in these processes, and that show their animosity towards the victimized political movements and the peace processes agreed upon or in the process of negotiation.”

Thus, they called on the UBPD to refine the criteria for hiring its officials, given that there are other cases in different territories where people who do not know about the issue of human rights, or the search, have been linked, such as It happens with the territorial manager of the Northeast zone. “This generates a lack of credibility in the entity on the part of the victims.”

“(…) in all cases of hiring and linking officials with responsibilities in the Unit, not only the humanitarian and extrajudicial nature of their mandate but the need for a basic requirement of empathy with the victimized social sectors and of essential commitment to the understanding of the peace processes and the commitments and risks that both the peace signatories, the spokespersons for the processes and the peace demands of broad sectors of Colombian society have been assuming,” they concluded.

Through a press release and after reviewing in detail the case of the hiring of Jairo Corzo, the Search Unit for Persons Reportedly Missing announced the departure of the official: “Once the complaint was received from some organizations, with In relation to the involvement of a collaborator in Magdalena Medio, the Entity proceeded to review the specific case within the framework of its autonomy and accepted the resignation of the server,” the document states.
