An ethane cracker is a plant that makes ethylene by “cracking” the molecules of ethane gas at high temperatures. Environmental groups complain that such an ethane cracker still runs on fossil raw materials.
Ethane gas is a by-product of shale gas, which is extracted in the United States, among other places, via the environmentally polluting fracking technique. The gas is extracted from underground rock layers, which are broken up by injecting a mix of water, sand and chemicals.
Ethylene is a building block for plastics or for plastic that is processed in, among other things, car parts, water pipes, windmill blades, clothing, food packaging, lubricants or disinfectant hand gels.
