Controversy Surrounding Distribution Law for Asylum Seekers: Outgoing State Secretary Urges House of Representatives

Outgoing State Secretary Eric van den Burg calls on the House of Representatives not to declare the distribution law controversial. According to the minister, municipalities, provinces and the COA are asking for the law. “The law would help me,” says Van den Burg in the radio program Sven op 1. If the law does not come into effect, he says he will find “another way” to distribute shelter.

Now that the cabinet has fallen, the law to spread asylum seekers across the country is likely to be delayed. Not only parties in the opposition are critical, but also coalition party VVD, Van der Burg’s party. During the debate on the fall of the cabinet, VVD party chairman Sophie Hermans did not want to explicitly say whether the liberals will vote against the law.

Parties on the right, such as the PVV and JA21, speak of a ‘coercive law’. PVV leader Geert Wilders previously called Van den Burg’s proposal “crazy”.

On September 12, the House of Representatives will determine whether the distribution law will be declared controversial. If that happens, the law will not be discussed until a new cabinet is formed. “I see that the provinces, municipalities, security regions, the King’s Commissioners, the Council for Refugees and the COA all say: don’t make the law controversial,” warns Van den Burg.

Mayor Hans Broekhuizen of the Overijssel municipality of Twenterand said earlier that postponement of the distribution law is “disastrous” for solving the asylum issue. “The law of dispersion wasn’t perfect, but something is better than nothing. It gave you something to hold onto, you know where you stand and what you have to do. That grip is now being broken away. With elections, the formation and a new minister, we are about 1.5 years further.”

‘I’m going full steam ahead’

Van den Burg therefore hopes that the law will be discussed by the House of Representatives and will eventually go to the Senate for review. “But it is currently up to the House. That is really the result of the fall of the cabinet,” says the demissionary state secretary. “If the Chamber nee says, then I will continue in a different way. The law would help me, but otherwise I will find another way.”

Van der Burg is going to Ter Apel today to take a closer look at the application center. Last summer, people had to sleep outside because of the high influx. Van den Burg wants to prevent a recurrence. “We have to ensure that we get the influx in order and that we have enough reception places. I will continue to do so, dispersion law or not”, he emphasizes.
