Controversy Surrounding Condom Distribution at 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics Sparks Debate and Protests

The 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics opened on the 19th.

1,802 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 78 National Olympic Committees and NOCs around the world are participating.

However, it appears that the competition organizing committee is distributing condoms to participating athletes, and parents’ groups are strongly opposing the organizing committee.

The organizing committee’s medical team recently secured 3,000 condoms and placed 2,500 in the Gangneung-Wonju National University athletes’ village and 500 in the Jeongseon High1 athletes’ village medical room.

When this news became known, parents’ groups strongly protested.

The National Federation of Parents’ Associations issued a statement condemning, “Distributing condoms at the Youth Olympic Games, which should be a place to cultivate a healthy body and a sound mind, is an act that undermines the spirit of the Olympics.”

At the same time, he said, “It is very wrong for the International Olympic Committee and the IOC to hand out condoms to teenagers and make a lame excuse that they are curious teenagers,” and argued, “If this happens again, the Youth Olympic Games should be abolished.”

In response to this, the IOC’s position is, “We are distributing condoms because we believe that youth athletes, who are at the peak of their sexual energy and curiosity, should also lead safe sex lives like adult athletes.”

If it is not possible to prevent athletes from having sex anyway, it makes sense to provide condoms to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies or infections.

Following the IOC’s policy, each organizing committee provided free condoms at the 2018 Buenos Aires Summer Youth Olympics and the 2020 Lausanne Winter Youth Olympics.

Condoms first began to be distributed in Korea’s athletes’ village at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At that time, when the first AIDS patient occurred in Korea, 8,500 condoms were provided in the name of preventing the spread.
