Controversy Surrounding Bheeman Raghu’s Gesture at State Film Awards Ceremony

Director, actor and Kerala Film Academy Chairman Ranjith says that actor Bheeman Raghu is a clown and a fool. Ranjith said that there is only muscle and Raghu is the clown of the film. Ranjith’s response was to a question about Bheeman Raghu standing up and listening to the entire speech of the Chief Minister at the state film award function. Ranjith opened his mind in an interview given to the national media. Ranjith said that the Chief Minister did not mind him.

Even after talking for 15 minutes, Pinarayi did not even look at Bhima Raghu standing up. In fact, that’s why I have more respect for him. When he said ‘Raghu sit there’ he became a man. Thus the spot does not make anyone human. Bheeman Raghu is a clown in the movie. Just having the muscle. It’s someone we’ve been teasing for so long. It is stupid’- says Ranjith.

‘A friend of ours once said – Raghu I cannot subjugate you by force and intelligence. Raghu asked that it could not be done by strength, but by intelligence he did not understand. Immediately our friend said – you don’t even understand that I said this as a joke, that’s it. Pulli did not understand even that’- says Ranjith.

Ranjith’s films have seen a lot of masculine characters, including one with a moustache, and when asked if he feels the days of such alpha male lead roles are over, he clarified that many of his male relatives influenced him to create such characters.

‘The characters in the film are created in different ways in each era. Alpha male characters may be due to the circumstances I grew up in. My uncles and relatives whom I have seen since childhood will not influence me. I grew up seeing men who showed their self-confidence like that. At that time mothers were confined to the house’- says Ranjith.

‘Although his father was different from it, many of his relatives had done such exercises. All that must have influenced us. We must have used it at some point. Then it must have been left’ – said Ranjith. When Ranjith was asked if he is a good enough person, Ranjith said that it is the answer that those who have lived with him for a long time should give and that only the one who sleeps with him knows Rapani.

Actor Bheeman Raghu stood up the entire time Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was speaking at the 53rd State Film Awards ceremony held on September 15. The incident took place at Nishagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram. The actor later responded that he stood up till the end of the speech as a sign of respect for the Chief Minister. Bheeman Raghu’s video went viral on social media.

Award winners like Kunchacko Boban, Vincy Aloysius, Lijo Jose Pellissery and others were present at the ceremony. Bheeman Raghu also got up when the Chief Minister arrived to deliver the inaugural address. For 15 minutes of the Chief Minister’s speech, the actor stood up in the audience with his hands folded. This also paved the way for big trolls.
