Controversy Surrounding Barbie Film and Feminism in Japan

Jakarta

Film Barbie became a global hit after its premiere in Japan. However, a manga comic artist named Hiroya Oku sparked a debate on the internet because of his satire on the elements of feminism in it.

Since the beginning of the screening of the Barbie film, it has succeeded in hitting cinemas around the world. Barbie still has many fans around the world but Hiroya Oku took to Twitter and shared his opinion about Barbie.

“I have watched the Barbie movie. At first, the movie was very trendy and cute. I laughed while watching it, but in the second half, it slowly cooled down,” tweeted Hiroya Oku, quoted from various sources, Wednesday (16/8/2023).

In fact, he said the Barbie film was a strong feminist film. “A film for independent women who feel they don’t need men. Is America okay to make films like this big hits,” he continued.

Unexpectedly, the comic artist’s tweet sparked debate in Japan. Even many feminists who have attacked it.

“Ah I’ve been discovered by feminists. It’s annoying,” she tweeted again.

Hiroya Oku isn’t the only audience member to be offended by the Barbie film. In Japan, the film directed by Greta Gerwig has never had a high audience, especially with the term Barbenheimer associated with Oppenheimer’s film.

After Warner Bros. Discovery shares support for Barbenheimer’s trend online, Japanese netizens rebuke Barbie in the same way as Oppenheimer.
