In July 2024, Archbishop Marek Jedraszewski he will cease to be the capital of Krakow – he will turn 75 and thus reach the retirement age of the church. This does not mean, however, that he will leave the town near Wawel.
As reported “Gazeta Wyborcza” in April, apartments in the center of Krakow are to be prepared for the clergy. Archbishop Jędraszewski is to move to a magnificent, historic estate with a garden at ul. Warszawska, in the parish of St. Flora.
Now, as the media learns, the curia overnight threw the young priest out of the residence, which is to be taken over by Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski. Other residents had to leave the building earlier: a former parish priest, Fr. Grzegorz Szewczyk and two housewives. In the case of the first, the curia announced that he was “resigning alone.” “
– On Monday, April 29, Marek received a letter stating that he had to vacate his apartment by Tuesday, April 30. This is terrible behavior by the curia! No one called him to Franciszkańska Street, he was not given suitable conditions for the following weeks, even until the end of the year, because he teaches at school. I have no words to explain such behavior, says the Krakow priest who works in the curia in an interview with “GW”.

– I have been watching this terrible story for several months with great anger. It should be noted, however, that Archbishop Jędraszewski is acting according to the law – says Fr. prof. Andrzej Kobyliński, head of the Department of Ethics at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.
The priest admits that Archbishop Jędraszewski, like all other Catholic bishops, is the real monarch of the diocese.
– And so he can do whatever he wants. both with clergy and with all the property of the archbishopric. Legally, this resident priest may not have had any contract signed with the parish or the Archbishop of Krakow, which may be why he could be fired overnight. In this situation, the law is on the side of the archbishop, noting the ethicist.
Our correspondent also admits that he doubts the permission of the custodian of the monuments to update the constellation. The moral side of the whole issue also leaves much to be desired.
– Is this what should happen in the Church? Of course not. However, this does not apply to individual cases, but to the whole system – especially when it comes to the status of retired bishops in Poland – he emphasizes .
– However, it is worth asking a moral question: should the bishops’ pensions look like this? When it comes to bishops and priests, the Polish Church moves from scandal to scandal, and this encourages boredom, especially of the young generation – listing the influence of Fr. Kobyliński.
The expert also admits that he sees in the Polish Church “an urgent need to limit the power of bishops.”
– The status in Poland is that almost all bishops, both incumbent and retired, lead an aristocratic lifestyle. However, subsequent scandals related to this cause cause the Church to lose credibility as an institution, he believes.
– The image of bishops in the public sphere is extremely negative. This is confirmed by sociological research. What is urgently needed in Poland is not more palaces and residences for bishops, but poverty, modesty, holiness and simplicity, he emphasizes.

I am thinking here especially of Archbishop Józef Wesołowski, who was a priest of the Archbishop of Krakow. What scares me is that the subject of clerical pedophilia victims is still kept silent, explained Fr. Kobyliński.
The priest also does not hide his criticism of many Polish bishops.
– Unfortunately, the values of the Gospel such as justice and faith are not interesting to many bishops and priests. The pagan faith is returning, emphasizing the importance of church rituals and celebrations – shares his views on the head of the Ethics Department of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

The three storey residence dates back to the 17th century. There is a large garden next to it. It was the people of the parish who revealed that the astronomer had been updated, and the city itself was personally monitoring the progress.
As it turns out, the keeper probably didn’t even know about the update.
– Individual registration in the register of monuments requires the owner to obtain a conservation permit before starting any work: conservation, restoration, architectural research or construction work – Sebastian Stanik, spokesman for the Departmental Office for the Protection of Monuments in Krakow, told Onet.
After media reports about the update, on April 3, WUOZ investigators updated at the astronomy at ul. Warsaw control.
– No construction work was carried out during this study. The investor explained that he is just preparing for the planned renovation and is currently at the stage of the necessary preparatory work and developing design documents – Sebastian Stanik from WUOZ contacted Onet.
