Jenrick told British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that the government’s new bill, which aims to reduce illegal immigration and send asylum seekers who have come to Britain illegally to Rwanda, was a “triumph of hope over experience” and was not broad enough.
Jenrick said his resignation was prompted by strong disagreements with the government over immigration policy.
Under the bill, which still needs to be approved by parliament, the government will have to consider Rwanda a safe country and ministers will have the power to ignore articles of the Human Rights Act. However, it will not allow to disregard the European Convention on Human Rights.
Jenrick has taken an increasingly tough line in recent weeks over plans to stop asylum seekers crossing the Channel illegally in small boats.
The British government’s decision to send illegal immigrants to Rwanda was made in April 2020, when Boris Johnson was the prime minister. However, no illegal immigrants have yet been sent to Kigali, as this has been constantly challenged in the courts.
