Controversy Over Sunday Folk People in Sofia: A Cultural Clash in the City Garden

Dissatisfaction is once again rising in Sofia against the Sunday Folk People, which are organized every week in the space in front of the “Ivan Vazov” National Theater in the City Garden. Residents of the capital have sent a letter to the contact center of the Metropolitan Municipality requesting it to intervene and prohibit their holding in this place by determining otherwise. “Although after the protests of many citizens, their holding in this place was prohibited and a location was determined in the garden in front of the Museum of Sofia, they are again held in front of the theater with a sound system. The location in front of the National Theater is emblematic of the city’s culture and the desire of the Bulgarian capital to become a European city from the first years after the Liberation. Self-activity and loud folk music in this place do not help much for this. On the contrary, they create a “patriotic Bulgaria” in an inappropriate place, which does not contribute to respect for traditional folk culture.” those dissatisfied with the dance performance are motivated.

“We urge the municipal police to restore public order in this place by organizing duty on weekends and imposing fines for holding unregulated events, directing those who wish to do so to the designated places,” suggest the senders of the letter.

The Metropolitan Municipality responded that the return of the Sunday folk in front of the National Theater did not happen behind its back, and the organizers notified “Moscowska” 33 in accordance with the law. “The holding and coordination of mass events is regulated by the Law on Assemblies, Rallies and Manifestations. According to the mentioned regulations, a notification regime has been introduced for the holding of rallies and demonstrations. The Municipality of Sofia has agreed to hold a gathering-meeting on the square between the National Theater and the City Garden from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in November, on December 3, 10 and 17, 2023 and from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on December 24, 2023. When holding any event, the organizer is required to take measures and not to violate the provisions of the current legislation, including the Environmental Noise Protection Act. SDVR has been notified to take the necessary measures to protect public order and safety during the event,” says the response .

In 2019, the former mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, banned the holding of Sunday choirs in the City Garden and suggested that they be organized elsewhere, after theater visitors complained that the loud music in the garden interfered with the performances. Dissatisfied commented that the dance event at this place led to a distortion of the idea, to pollution of the City Garden, making unpleasant noise and caused problems for the actors and spectators in the National Theatre. Thus, on the sixth year since the start of the mass playing of folk people in the City Garden, the municipality suggested to the organizers to move them to another place. After that, there were those in front of the Central Bath and in other parts of the center, before in 2023 they returned again in front of the “Ivan Vazov” NT.
