Controversy Over Penalty Call in Strasbourg vs Brest Match: Referee and VAR Clash on Ball Going Out?

We are playing the 58th minute between Strasbourg and Brest when Pierre Lees-Melou saves a ball which was flying six meters. His attempted cross hit Lucas Perrin’s arm and Mr. Brisard immediately whistled for a penalty. But a few seconds later, the referee is challenged by the VAR, who suspects that the ball has gone out.

In slow motion, the ball seems, if not completely out, to the extreme limit of the goal line. After a long wait, the penalty was confirmed and converted for Mahdi Camara’s hat-trick. Canal+ then evokes on the air a misunderstanding between the referee and his VAR assistants. But it’s impossible to know 100% whether the ball is out or not.

The goal-line technology is only active on the line drawn between the cages, thanks to a network of autonomous cameras. Extending its use to all lines would represent far too high a cost, for very situational use. In these conditions of uncertainty, Mr. Brisard decided to follow his initial decision and award the penalty.
