Controversy over Ownership of “Adam al-Rasoul Hospital” Property: Clarifying the Facts

The head of the “Movement for Change,” lawyer Elie Mahfoud, issued positions a while ago stating that the property on which the “Adam al-Rasoul Hospital” was built in the southern suburbs is owned by the Maronite Archdiocese of Beirut.

Mahfoud raises the issue of ownership of the property more than once to verify the identity of the owners of that property, and whether what he says is documented or if it falls within the framework of political disputes.

When the Beirut Archbishopric reviewed the Maronites, the referral was made to the Archdiocese’s lawyer, and after his review, he referred again to the Archdiocese’s secretariat, as “perhaps there is a misunderstanding of the matter.”

The other party was the municipality of Burj al-Barajneh, where its head, Atef Mansour, confirmed to An-Nahar that the property on which the Great Prophet Hospital was built does not belong to the diocese, as was reported, adding: “Real estate in that area is subject to joint ownership, and therefore there are many owners of the property who own shares in it.” The number may reach thousands of owners, and among them may be owners from the honorable Maronite sect, but it is not possible to know the percentage of shares they own.

As for the hospital administration, it does not comment on what is raised in the media from time to time, but local circles call on whoever claims ownership to present evidence of that and to present his documents so that he can follow the judicial path to collect and preserve rights.
