Controversy over Madrid Municipality’s Depressed White Actor as Baltazar in Video Greeting for Children

It was a mistake on the part of the video makers, the representatives of the municipality explained.

Opposition MPs condemned the video, in this situation where a dark-skinned character is portrayed by a depressed white actor, seeing racism.

According to the gospel story and church tradition, three wise men – Baltazar, Melchior and Kaspar – come to honor the newborn son of God from the east. Sometimes they are called magi or kings.

According to the newspaper “El Mundo”, the Madrid city council in the Charmatín district has sent personalized videos to several children in which Baltazar is portrayed by a depressed white actor who speaks with a peculiar accent in the video.

In Charmatin, home to about 140,000 people, the municipal district board has sent greetings from the three wise men of the east to children whose parents had previously requested it.

Six actors have been hired to portray the sages of the East – “five blacks and one who was not,” sources in the municipality told the news agency.

The actor was chosen for the recording “taking into account the availability of the ‘kings’, as they have a lot of work these days”, and “at least two Baltazars were sick with covid, and we had to use someone who is not black”, the sources explained.
