Last January, we reported on a case in which a 19-year-old driver assaulted a victim who protested after causing a traffic accident by putting his knuckles on his hands.
Even though the victim was blinded, the perpetrator was released on probation.
Controversy is brewing.
Reporter Sang-moon Yoon reports.

A downtown area in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do.
A vehicle reversing hits a passing man.
The driver got out of the car.
He approaches the pedestrian and violently swings his fist.
Instead of using bare fists, he was wearing knuckles, a self-defense device.
The victim suffered serious injuries to his left eye and eventually lost his vision.

″(My husband) said, “Let’s just go and say it’s okay,” and looked at the driver’s seat… Almost as soon as we made eye contact, he got out of the car and hit me right away without even saying anything… ″
The 19-year-old driver fled and threatened the victim and another citizen with a weapon.
The offender who was arrested and indicted was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison in the first trial, but was released yesterday after his sentence was reduced to 1 year and 6 months in prison and 3 years of probation in the second trial.
During the second trial, the victim lost his eyesight and the charges became more severe, but the sentence was actually lightened.
The reason for lowering the sentence was that “none of the victims wanted to be punished, and the young defendant had been detained for more than nine months in this case.”

″I think it is unusual for a suspended sentence to be given simply because the victim lost his eyesight, used knuckles or a knife, and there were multiple victims, but the defendant reflected, came to an agreement, and was young.″
However, in principle, in cases where the sentence is less than 10 years in prison, the prosecution cannot appeal simply because the sentence is ‘light,’ so it appears that the second trial sentence will be confirmed.
