Controversy over Implementation of Pope Francis’ Proposal for Unified Mass in Ernakulam Angamaly Archdiocese

Kochi: Pope Francis’ proposal to offer unified mass in Ernakulam Angamaly Archdiocese from Christmas has not been implemented in most of the churches. In 328 out of 290 churches, the Pathira Mass of Piravi Thiwanal was offered to the public. Ernakulam St. Mary’s Basilica Church, the archdiocesan church, was not opened due to the possibility of conflict.

In over 100 churches only one mass was offered on Christmas morning, while in some churches more than one mass was held.

When the Pathira Mass began in Chittoor St. Thomas Church, the police removed those who tried to stop it and those who tried to impose a unified mass demanded that those who tried to impose a unified mass should recognize the position of the believers, Almaya Munnetram Convener Jamie August and Spokesperson Riju Kanjukaran.

Apostolic Administrator Bosco Puttur at St. Mary’s Basilica has accused the Joint Church Protection Committee of disobedience to the Pope’s directive to start the unified Mass from Christmas. Committee office-bearers Matthai Muthirenti, Jimmy Puthirikal, Vitsan Vadakkuncheri, Johnny Thotakkara, Baby Potanani and Johnson Konikara said that Bosco Puthur, who is helping the rebels, does not deserve to continue.
