Controversy over Bruce Springsteen concert in Ferrara during flood aftermath

A letter to you. A letter to Bruce Springsteen and Mayor Alan Fabbri. To send it is Nicholas Minarelliprovincial secretary of the Democratic Party of Ferrara who, to quote the title of a famous song by the American rocker, via his Facebook profile, wrote a letter to the Boss and to the mayor of Ferrara. The letter arrives the day after the mega-concert held on Thursday evening (May 18) at the «Giorgio Bassani» urban park and rekindles the controversies of recent days, when both the world of politics and public opinion questioned the opportunity or not to have the show take place, despite the flood in nearby Romagna.

“Bruce, your awkward silence”

«Dear Bruce and dear administration: here there is another Ferrara – begins Nicola Minarelli – and right up to the end we have hoped that a little ethics and common sense would lead to not stubbornness in the realization of the event. Unfortunately, the logic of the God of money prevailed. Springsteen’s silence on stage yesterday, the reduced lineup compared to other concerts: for the humanity that the artist has always shown, it’s a discordant note that perhaps reveals embarrassment. It is not not even the allocation of part of the proceeds from the concert to support the flood victims has been envisaged, and this really causes me bewilderment and disgust. A slap to the Emilia-Romagna people, including also many Springsteen fans, treated like fish in the face by the organization and from the people of Ferrara and from our city: that same city which, eleven years ago, battered by the earthquake, received solidarity and support».

The concert had to be cancelled.

Minarelli attacks: «I made a huge mistake, however, to use us and our city. No, only a few are responsible, those who should have acted morally but instead turned away thinking that a 10,000 euro donation to Faenza could ease their conscience. Ferrara is not this. Because we are from Emilia-Romagna and our strength is in that indent, made up of ties and brotherhood. Once again we will be able to get back up and Ferrara, unfortunately not whoever administers it, is at the forefront to do everything he can. Canceling the concert would have required much more courage than confirming it, I am aware of it. I had deluded myself that the council of Ferrara, also strong in an important electoral consensus, was. I was wrong”. And he explains: «Cancelling it would have allowed the city to gain great external positive visibility, even if we wanted to think in terms of electoral consensus. Canceling the concert would have told the world that this city is always there in times of need. On the weight of any consequent economic sacrifices, he would have found an entire city council on his side ».

Mud and music: two jarring images

“This would have been the most beautiful image that Ferrara could have given inside and outside its walls” continues the politician, who also entrusts his letter to the Boss to social networks. “As only the shame of the must go on show will remain, while at 40 km people are still trapped in the mud of the rivers». «There is another Ferrara – concludes the provincial secretary of the Democratic Party – and on behalf of this one I feel like apologizing to my Emilia-Romagna friends. We will not recover the shame that will remain, alas in history, but it is a duty for those who have their founding values in solidarity and humanity, to do their part, albeit small. In the paradox of the mud of these days, and of these two strident photos, we don’t see Romagna on one side and Ferrara on the other. We see two different ideas of life, of understanding politics and public responsibility. And I feel like embracing the first one as tightly as I can». Now we await the response from the Boss
