Representative Feinstein, born in 1933, entered politics after graduating from college and served as mayor of San Francisco for 10 years starting at the age of 45.
She was the first female mayor.

He is the longest-serving and oldest politician in the history of the U.S. Senate.

Congressional colleagues commemorated the deceased with a moment of silence and hung flags outside the White House and public institutions.
Rep. Feinstein had been under pressure to resign since last year, as his health had deteriorated and he had been unable to work for a long period of time, and had announced that he would retire from politics next year.
As he eventually died before completing his term, the controversy over older politicians, such as 80-year-old President Joe Biden and 81-year-old Republican leader Mitch McConnell, is expected to intensify.
