An Israeli player who played in the Turkiye professional soccer league was kicked out of the team after posting a post calling for the release of hostages related to the Israel-Hamas war.

According to AFP on the 18th (local time), Eden Kartsev, a player from Turkey’s first division club Basaksehir, said on the 14th, “Bring them home immediately,” demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas as the war marked its 100th day. He shared a post containing the message “Let’s come” (#BringThemHomeNow) on his Instagram.

After Kartsev posted the post, Turkiye police immediately began an investigation. This is because Turkiye is taking a position of supporting Palestine in relation to the Israeli war. However, detailed information, such as on what charges the police are investigating Kartsev, is unknown.

The Basaksehir team said in a statement, “The player was fined in accordance with the club’s disciplinary instructions.” He went on to say, “It was judged appropriate for him to continue his career as a player abroad rather than in Turkicye,” adding that he sent Karchev, who was brought in on loan from Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv last year, back to his original club.

Sagib Yehezkel, an Israeli soccer player for the Turkye Club, is celebrating by raising his left hand to the camera after scoring in a game on the 14th. On the bandage was written “100 days. The words “October 7th” and a picture of the Star of David are engraved on it. /X

Another Israeli player who previously played for Turkiye also ran into trouble for similar reasons. Antalyaspor club Sagib Yehezkel celebrated by raising his bandaged left hand after scoring in a game held on the 14th. His bandages had the words “100 days.” A Star of David was drawn along with the words “October 7th.” This refers to the 100th day of the war triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

Yehezkel was detained overnight for this ceremony. At the time, the Antalya Turkiye Prosecutor’s Office said it had launched an investigation into Yehezkel on charges of openly inciting hatred and hostility among the public. The club also said that it had excluded Yehezkel from the starting lineup, saying, “He acted against the values of our country,” and that his contract would also be terminated.

Yehezkel returned to Israel on the 15th after being investigated and released. In relation to this, Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticized, “It has shown that Turkey has become a dark dictatorship.”
