In the Saintes district, the school map, unveiled on March 4, does not only make people happy. Far from it. In Montils, the decision of National Education to close a class at the start of the next school year is driving the normally calm mayor, Victor Nguewoua, “crazy”. In La Clisse, the elimination of two classes amounts to permanently closing the school.

Thénac is no better off than its neighbors. In any case, out of his seven classes, one would be cut in September. “Incomprehensible” according to the parents. Who, in reaction, sent a letter to the academic director, Mahdi Tamene, with a copy to the district inspector, Sylvie Charpentier. “We want our children to have the best learning opportunities, as the government promises us,” they wrote to him, alongside an on-site petition.

Particular attention

For her part, the mayor of Thénac Sylvie Mercier has difficulty understanding the relevance of this decision. Because, while equality of opportunity is a major axis of educational policy, it would here “strongly impact the fact that a significant number of students need specific monitoring, these students require particular attention requiring a wider support time”.

The Thénac school now receives 148 students: around thirty either benefit from assistance from Rased (1), or have a file at the Departmental House for Disabled People, or attend medical-psychological centers.

The forecasts for the 2024-2025 school year are 142 students, which puts the average for six classes at 23.66 students: a result “too close to the 24 students maximum”, notes the first magistrate of Thénac, “more than surprised” by this closure project, of which she became aware “not without great concern”.

The councilor understands even less as his town is located near Saintes, “on a structuring axis, with residential areas in the process of being commercialized”. Doesn’t the situation in Thénac deserve an adjusted response?
