Controversy in Malpica over the disappearance of Castelao in a mural by the author of the super-grandmothers

Complaints from a neighbor lead to the replacement of the iconic cartoon by the author of “Semper en Galiza” by the wolf on the council’s coat of arms

Few times Castelao, the great symbol of Galicianism, has suffered an affront like the one that has been completed in Malpica, much to the dismay of almost all his neighbors. The author of Always in Galicia became these days one more element of the mural that Yoseba MP., the painter and ideologist of the super grandmothers that shine through Galicia, completed in a Malpica party wall commissioned by the City Council. The idea was to dress a square in which a neighbor plans to donate a large bronze propeller as tribute to the people of the sea.

A Yoseba They commissioned him to paint a ship breaking the waves to commemorate the epic of three other ships that went into exile in France during the Civil War. And the artist chose one called Castelao, which wears on the bridge and on the helmet the famous caricature that the polygraph made of himself.

The tragedy began to chew when some criticisms of the choice of the ship began to appear on social networks. So, to temper bagpipes, the mayor asked that the ship be renamed as New Malpica, so that it was more of all.

Last Wednesday, the Cambre artist had a particularly intense day. First, get vaccinated. And then he went to Malpica to finish the mural. He did so and fired the crane he used for the job. But early in the afternoon he met the mayor (PSOE) and the neighbor who was going to donate the sculpture chatting next to the recently completed mural. The problem was Castelao. For the philanthropist, his presence took center stage in the new square that became, he said, a tribute to Castelao and not to the exiled ships and, in general, to the people of the sea. So without stating it clearly, let it drop that either the mural was modified, or his donation was left in the air.

Urgent meeting

Yoseba says that there was no way to convince the donor otherwise, so that same afternoon, an emergency meeting was called in which the mayor, the artist, the donor, the owner of the ship portrayed in the mural, a local historian and a municipal technician. None of those present could save the icon Galician who was erased from the mural at nightfall. It was all quite surrealYoseba comments: The truth is that I felt conditioned and forced to change it.

The painter, with a work in the middle of Galicia, does not remember anything like this happening to him to date. So, with the fever that the vaccine left him in the morning, he got on the crane that he had to urgently call the council and made Alfonso Daniel disappear as if he had never been on that wall. I replaced it with a wolf, one of the icons on Malpica’s shield. Then he got off the crane and left.

To date, the mayor has avoided commenting on the controversy, which has pissed off half the town. He states that the project is unfinished and that talk when done. Meanwhile, the debate grows in the town. There are already those who have even offered a crane to restore the father of modern Galicianism to the dividing wall so, apparently, the controversy is far from extinct. We will have to wait to see if Castelao is resurrected, although the possibilities, at the moment seem slim.
