Controversy Erupts Over Olympic Poster Excluding French Flag and Christian Cross

Several right-wing and far-right leaders questioned on Tuesday the official poster for the Olympic Games unveiled the day before, which does not feature any tricolor flag or Christian cross on the dome of Les Invalides.

More political than artistic, the criticism quickly exploded on the social network at the Europeans, Marion Maréchal, pretended to wonder: “Why did you erase the cross at the top of the dome of Les Invalides? Why no French flag? What is the point of organizing the Olympic Games in France if it is to hide what we are?”

They accuse the poster of distorting the history of France

His competitor at Les Républicains, François-Xavier Bellamy, more directly denounced those who “are ready to deny France to the point of distorting reality to cancel its history”focusing on the cross which “constitutes the deeper meaning” invalidities.

France dishonors itself by denying its history and culture

This dome “is not that of a supermarket but of a chapel”added the president of his party, Eric Ciotti, for whom the poster “denies the very identity of this building as well as French history”. The work of the illustrator Ugo Gattoni is “scandalous”estimated the sovereignist Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, judging that France dishonors itself by denying its history and its culture”.

On the side of the National Rally, several deputies reacted in the same tone, like their spokesperson Thomas Ménage deploring “a sadly ridiculous example of the great erasure of Franceor Nicolas Meizonnet castigating “wokism (which) must be fought relentlessly everywhere”.
