Controversy Erupts Over Conservative Leader’s Interview Marathon: Reactions and Criticisms

The reactions were not long in coming after the broadcast, which put an end to the Conservative leader’s interview marathon last Thursday.

Several took to social media and criticized Fredrik Solvang for not being tougher in the pinch in the inquiry into Sindre Finnes’ share purchase while she was prime minister, and her own competence during the same period.

The following morning, the Broadcasting Council had received 30 complaints. By the same afternoon, the number had increased to 150, and on Monday morning it was double that.

The Broadcasting Council has not yet decided whether they will consider the matter at their next meeting, which is on 26 October.

– It has not been decided. It will happen closer to the meeting, writes the secretary of the Broadcasting Council, Erik Skarrud, in an SMS to Dagbladet.

Punished – and taken on defense

In the broadcast, Solberg was asked a number of questions by both Solvang and the viewers about the share and competence case. Critics have compared the interview to a couple’s therapy session, and accused it of being “cheesy”.

The presenter said after the broadcast to Dagbladet that it was never intended to be an interrogation.

– We came last in the series of 17 interviews. I have so much respect for all the talented journalist colleagues who have been around and done hard-hitting interviews with Erna Solberg all day. So much respect that I would not try to either repeat or surpass the very good interviews that have been done, said Solvang.

He has also been defended by NRK’s news editor Knut Magnus Berge and by “Dagsnytt 18” presenter Espen Aas, who disagrees with the characteristics the critics have come up with.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), the latter argued that Solvang actually pressured Solberg, but that he saw it as an advantage that the interviewee was allowed to speak, without too many interruptions.

– People want to hear what interviewees have to say. Then of course there are many interviews that should have been much sharper as well. But I don’t think yesterday was one of them, wrote Aas.

The case is updated!
