Controversy between Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski: The Ballon d’Or and World Cup Incident

Miami

Lionel Messi apparently had time to ‘revenge’ Robert Lewandowski. It was triggered by a moment Ballon d’Or 2021.

As reported by ESPN, Messi admitted that he had deliberately embarrassed Lewandowski. It happened in 2022 World Cup Qatar late last year.

In the group phase match between Argentina vs Poland, there was a moment where Lewandowski was ignored by Messi. The Polish striker asked to shake hands, but La Pulga ignored him.

Messi’s reaction at that time was apparently because he was still annoyed with Lewandowski. Lewandowski’s words after Messi won the 2021 Ballon d’Or were thought to have annoyed him.

In 2021, Messi won the Ballon d’Or beating Lewandowski. On his victory podium, the Argentinian star said that Lewandowski actually deserved to win in 2020, when the Ballon d’Or event was canceled due to the pandemic.

However, words Lionel Messi considered nonsense by Robert Lewandowski. The striker thought Messi was just bragging, which really annoyed Messi and responded by refusing to shake hands at the 2022 World Cup.

“Lewandowski’s statements in 2021 bother me, because when I won the Ballon d’Or I said what I really felt,” Messi said.

“I ignored him during the match (at the World Cup -ed) because of that, and I was angry and thought he shouldn’t have said it. I was very angry. Did I dribble the ball on purpose because it was him? Yes,” said Messi.

Even so, Messi admitted that he spoke with Lewandowski afterwards. Both agreed that there had been a misunderstanding, after Lewandowski’s comments were ‘misinterpreted’. The relationship between the two also improved after Lewandowski joined Barcelona last season, which incidentally was Messi’s former club.

“After that we met and talked and agreed that it was a misunderstanding. He was annoyed because what he said did not match what was reported. Then he went to Barcelona and we talked about a lot of things about the club, the city and everything,” he explained.

Robert Lewandowski himself still hasn’t been able to win the Ballon d’Or until now. Temporary Lionel Messi just won the 8th golden ball trophy some time ago.
