Controversy has arisen as Germany legalizes some recreational cannabis use.
The idea is to curb the black market and drug crimes by bringing illegal cannabis consumption to sunny areas, but there are also strong voices opposing it due to possible side effects.
Our compatriots are also expressing concerns.

Last year, 4.5 million adults in Germany inhaled marijuana at least once.
In particular, it was found that one quarter of people under the age of 24 have tried marijuana.
Under current German law, possession and distribution of marijuana is prohibited in principle, but possession of less than 15 grams is not actually punished.
Because of this, it is not difficult to find people using recreational marijuana on the streets.

In this situation, controversy is growing as the German government has partially legalized the use of recreational cannabis since last August.
Each person can possess up to 25g per day, and members of cannabis social clubs can be provided with up to 50g per month.
Citizens are divided in their opinions regarding this measure, which seeks to make purchasing channels more gender-neutral and limit usage.

Politicians and experts are also divided on the pros and cons.
The German government explains that it is “legalizing cannabis because it has failed to suppress it.”
Since there has been so much illegal trade and use in the meantime, the idea is to raise the cannabis market to a sunny area, prevent the distribution of low-quality cannabis, and manage drug users.
In response to this, the center-right opposition party, the legal community, and the medical community say that even if controlled by law, it is difficult to manage and supervise with the current workforce.
The position is that if a loophole is created, the black market where drugs stronger than cannabis are distributed will expand.
The Korean community in Germany is also watching these changes with concern.

In particular, Korean citizens should be aware that if they come into contact with marijuana, they will be punished under Korean law upon their return to their home country.

Accordingly, the Consulate General requested that Korean citizens be more careful to avoid accidentally coming into contact with marijuana while staying or traveling in Germany.
