There is relief in via Asiago in Rome after the decision – announced by Fiorello and made official by Rai – to move the glass gazebo, headquarters of the Viva Rai2! broadcast elsewhere, which had so angered the residents due to the noise, dirt and inconvenience. Relief and, perhaps, even a little bitterness at how it ended: «They have spread the rumor of compensation to the residents – says Giandomenico Mortara, among the first to write to Rai in December and also to the mayor Gualtieri -: we have certainly never asked for anything, we have only claimed the right to our personal freedom, for example to be able to take a taxi – me now an old man – without having to drag my suitcases to the end of the street, closed by the police for the show…».
Choirs, drums and confetti
One of the many examples is that of Signor Giandomenico. Then here in via Asiago, home to many Rai offices and studios, they also talk about confetti, paint, drums, choirs, the public from outside bringing caciottas and cherries. But after all, it was Fiorello himself, in his own apology videos for those “overwhelming” days, to admit that the situation has gotten a little out of hand for everyone. In short, they didn’t think, at the beginning, that the show would be so successful, and followed by the public, even physically present on the street.
The resident: “We didn’t even sleep with ear plugs”
Marianna Filippi lives right at the crossroads between via Asiago and via Montello. Ground floor, she could see and hear everything from the window overlooking the street. «I teach foreign languages to the kids, I work from home, I have to say it was very hard – she says, still tired at the thought of those sleepless days and nights-. There were many problems, you couldn’t go out or even walk and then during the Festival with music at night, until 3, it was harmful, I couldn’t sleep even with ear plugs».
But who authorized all this, they are now asking from the seventh floor of via Asiago, how is it possible that policemen are employed for such a service?
The bar: «Sorry, we had fun and it was good for business»
As in all stories, also in that of Viva Rai2! there are instead those who would have still wanted it, Fiorello, like the owners of the “Star Wars” bar up front, protagonists of many live broadcasts: they had been working in the place for 8 years, then 3 years ago they took it over but – disaster – it arrived the Covid. And so for them and for their Fiore bar it was a bit of a salvation: «We brought the opening hours forward – says Stefano Belli, one of the owners – we worked a lot, before and after the broadcast they passed by here to consume… ». And then, net of business, it was a pleasure: “We had fun, perhaps this story has also brought out the sadness that is inside someone”.
Victory on social media: “Out of a nightmare”
However, the chapter on via Asiago seems closed. Even Carmen, from the group of residents of “Liberate via Asiago” among the most aggressive in denouncing and asking for help, writes a final message on Facebook: «Finally the apologies have arrived! At least those of Fiorello. A special thank you to those who helped us get out of this nightmare: to those who protested with us, to those who shared our protests, to those who supported us with every means at their disposal, in this period in which our voice she seemed suffocated by those who screamed louder because they were more powerful. Without you we probably would not have managed to achieve this result».
The new location
Now, Rai and Fiorello are looking for a new location. A proposal, “purely on a personal basis”, comes from the municipal councilor Renato Santini (Civic Gualtieri list) who is one of the most active in addressing the discontent of the tenants: «There are free spaces, for example behind here in via Col di Lana where we will school street, or in the Teulada park near the judicial citadel: in neither case are there buildings with tenants, let’s think about it before having to start new battles in other streets».
In the meantime, however, other bars and clubs are stepping up. On Instagram there are those who post photos of possible locations and gazebos: «Fiorello, look how wonderful, all for you! Other than via Asiago!». And Alessia Marcuzzi, who lives in Rome, writes: «Now I convince the condominiums of my house so I can see you directly from the window! How can one live without you, it’s not possible!».
