Controversy and Concerns Surrounding the Creation of a New Radiotherapy Center in Le Havre

The team at the Guillaume Le Conquérant center in Le Havre is mobilizing against the creation of a new radiotherapy center in the ocean city.

“It may seem like good news (…) but for us it constitutes nonsense.” Paul Lesueur, oncologist and radiotherapist at the Guillaume the Conqueror center, denounces the arrival of a new private radiotherapy center in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) which was done “without consultation”.

“There is no need”

“We have been the historic center for more than 60 years in Le Havre. We take care of 1,500 patients per year, that’s 100 to 130 patients every day,” he underlines this Thursday on the set of BFM Normandie.

According to him, “today, there is no need” to create a new radiotherapy center in the ocean city. “There is no time limit for treatment,” adds Paul Lesueur, who affirms that a patient who needs emergency treatment can be seen during the day at the center.

10 million euros are invested between 2020 and 2024 in the William the Conqueror center. “All the most innovative techniques are available”, as in Caen or Rouen, continues the oncologist.

“We would find ourselves, rather than having an efficient center which has a certain volume of activity (…) we would find ourselves with two small centers. It could even be dangerous when we have difficulty recruiting” , he explains on BFM Normandie.

Another reason for concern: ending up with machines that do not run or not enough with the coexistence of two radiotherapy centers in Le Havre.

However, other sectors of the region would be more in need of such an implementation. According to Paul Lesueur, the city of Dieppe could instead host a radiotherapy center while residents often go to Le Havre or Rouen for examinations.
