According to NRK, there have been approximately 2,500 inquiries to the Broadcasting Council regarding the coverage of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. About 1,000 of the inquiries are complaints about “New again” about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and about the news coverage of the same conflict has received about 600 complaints. The latter was first on the meeting agenda of the Broadcasting Council on Thursday.

– This is the most important thing NRK is doing now, and it affects our entire organisation. It has been a major operation, and work has been done around the clock, said NRK’s foreign affairs editor Sigurd Falkenberg Mikkelsen.
And he added:
– There is a lot of disinformation out there. It is much bigger than we have experienced before. Social media is in high gear, so it makes accessing information difficult.
– Wanted a war in the studio
Several of the members of the Broadcasting Council were concerned with NRK’s ”The Debate” broadcast which was broadcast on Tuesday 10 October, only a few days after Hamas’s terrorist attack.
– I agree with the criticism that has emerged in the complaints against the broadcast on 10 October. I think that inviting those who were invited was like saying that now we want to have a little war in the studio. It was painful to watch. We have representatives who do not represent what is the correct image, and therefore I agree with the criticism that has come against the “Debate” on 10 October.

One of the other members of the Broadcasting Council, Stine Renate Håheim, also agreed with Døving.
– I agree that you should consider inviting other actors with a bit more distance to what has happened, but I also agree that a debate about something else that day would be strange, she said.
Program editor at NRK, Knut Magnus Berge, did not agree with the characterization that NRK was planning a “war in the studio”.
– I disagree a little when it is characterized as that we set up a war in the studio. We called in affected parties, and there was a conversation about a very demanding topic. Of course, it aroused strong feelings, but it was done in a civilized way, he commented.

Presence
A presence in Gaza was also called for. Council member Akhtar Chaudry wanted to know more about why NRK does not have journalists on the ground in Gaza, because he has noted that large media houses such as the BBC and Al Jazeera have people in Gaza. Falkenberg Mikkelsen replied that ongoing assessments are made, but that it is also something that must be seen in the light of the security situation in the area.

– It is not that we have not covered the Palestinian side here, but that does not mean that I do not see the problem, was some of what NRK’s foreign affairs editor said in his reply.
