In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake in Japan killed or went missing more than 100,000 people.
Afterwards, rumors such as “Koreans poisoned the well” circulated, and internal dissatisfaction in Japanese society turned against Koreans, leading to a tragedy in which thousands of Koreans were slaughtered.
In order to honor the victims of the Korean massacre, which the Japanese government has not officially recognized, a memorial service has been held in Tokyo since 1974 centered on civil society, and the 100th anniversary memorial service was held on the 1st.
However, controversy arose when independent lawmaker Yoon Mi-hyang attended the event.
The organizers included the ‘General Association of Korean Residents in Japan’, a pro-North Korean Zainichi Korean organization, and a Korean member of the National Assembly attended with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a member of the National Assembly.
At the memorial service, it was reported that the leadership of a ‘Chochongnyeon’ group described the Korean government as a ‘puppet party in South Korea’.
The power of the people urged the expulsion of Congressman Yoon, raising the level of ideological offensive.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that it was inappropriate to attend events related to Chochongnyeon, only providing vehicle support at the request of the National Assembly Secretariat.
As the controversy grew, Congressman Yoon refuted that it was a memorial service hosted by a memorial service committee composed of Japanese civil society organizations and compatriots groups, and ‘Jochongnyeon’ was only one of them.
At the same time, he argued that the conservative media is splitting into color theory.
