The deployment of cLinky counters in France experiencing turbulence. The device allows real-time communication of a household’s electricity consumption, rthus reducing the travel of Enedis agents for meter readings and offering consumers a dashboard to adjust their energy consumption. But Linky is at the center of controversy and this decision, which has become public, could well have an impact on the future of events.
First legal decision for the withdrawal of a Linky meter
Users fearing abusive commercial exploitation of their personal data have always asserted that the connected meter was not obligatory, which Enedis finally confirmed last January after several years of opposing position. From now on, consumers have the right to refuse the installation of a Linky in their home for the “modest” sum of €61 per year.
In this context, a significant event has just occurred: for the first time, the court ordered Enedis to remove a Linky meter from the home of an octogenarian and replace it with an old, unconnected model. Since the meter was installed, the 81-year-old woman had seen a deterioration in her health which she attributed to her electro-sensitivity.
After 5 years of living together with Linky and suffering, several doctors confirmed his condition and established a link between his symptoms and the presence of the connected meter. This decision could therefore set a precedent for all users with similar pathologies: they can now have their doctors confirm the damage they have suffered and rely on this prescription to force Enedis to remove Linky meters.
Does this decision open the door to other takedowns of Linky?
This legal precedent could also offer more weight to resistance fighters who still refuse to opt for Linky for equivalent reasons and are victims of permanent power cuts. This is therefore a first victory for the anti-Links.
Towards a brake in the deployment of Linky in France?
Although it is still too early to assess the direct consequences of this first legal decision on the withdrawal of a Linky meter, it would nevertheless seem that it marks a major turning point in the standoff between Enedis and its customers. However, this affair could generate a real shock wave concerning the future of the smart meter in France:
The number of protesting users could increase; Other complaints could be filed and result in the uninstallation of Linky meters; Finally, growing distrust of the system could jeopardize the energy saving and ecological transition objectives planned by the State.
The smart meter, symbol of a necessary adaptation to consumer needs
To hope to reverse the trend and restore its image, Enedis will therefore have to consider the demands and fears of its consumers if it wishes to succeed in the widespread deployment of smart meters on French territory. A question of communication but also of adaptability according to the dissatisfaction and problems encountered by users will inevitably be at the heart of this approach.
