A fountain opened in October in Vienna caused bewilderment, ridicule and anger, reported AFP.
“Where is the ugliest fountain in the world? In Austria!”, “Shame!”, “What a horror!”, “Is this a joke?”, are the comments on social networks.
The large-scale work of gray concrete consists of 33 figures, as if made by small children, which surround a stream of water.
The fountain was commissioned by the Municipality to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the city’s supply of spring water, which Vienna is proud of. It was inaugurated on 24 October by Mayor Michael Ludwig, who said it was “interesting”, and by President Alexander van der Bellen.
Viennese collective Gelitin won the competition with their concept, which “represents society’s responsibility towards water, the protection of which is increasingly important” in the face of increasing drought.
However, the fountain is not to the liking of many. On the social network Ex, known until recently as Twitter, there are comments about the contrast between it and the neoclassical model in front of the Parliament. Text in English how it is a pity that “only this was done for 1.8 million euros taken from the taxpayers” was seen more than 7.5 million times, in a population of 9 million people.
Apart from the discussion about the place of modern art in public spaces, it is the price of the fountain that causes the greatest confusion.
Less than a week after its opening, black tears were drawn on the figures, notes AFP.
