Controversial Venezuelan in the US raises money for 15-year-old shooter’s bail

Leo Moreno, a Venezuelan in the United States, generated controversy by asking his compatriots to contribute money to pay the alleged bail of a 15-year-old teenager who is detained for shooting in a sports store in Times Square, in New York City, and attacking the police officers who chased him when he tried to flee the scene.

“On behalf of all Venezuelans who are good-hearted, I speak for the entire Venezuelan, Hispanic and Latin American community,” Moreno expressed in a video that he shared on social networks and that has received rejection from several users. “Today is the day to make history and give second chances to the 15-year-old who made a mistake,” he added.

Abroad proposed to donate $100 dollars to raise money for Jesús Alejandro Rivas Figueroa and assured that it is an opportunity to “demonstrate the unity” of Venezuelans.

“I am going to show my face with 100 dollars so that our Venezuelan family is free, since we all know that they made a mistake and the young man is going to be free. $100 dollars will not make you richer and much less will it make you poorer. We cannot judge a 15-year-old boy, who could be your son, your neighbor’s, your grandfather, your brother, he could be any of your relatives who is in need,” he said.

“How many people put their hand in their pocket and take out the money they don’t need and donate it to the cause? It is the opportunity to show the world that Venezuelans are united in good times and bad,” he said.

The Venezuelan teenager faces serious legal consequences for his actions in Times Square. It was recently known that his mother was detained by immigration officials when the agents arrested her son, a relative told the newspaper The New York Post.

Leo Moreno, however, spreads false information on his social networks about the case of Jesús Alejandro Rivas Figueroa, since on February 10 a judge ordered that held without bail in a juvenile detention center.

In addition, he confuses the teenager with Yohenry Brito, 24, who He was detained at Rikers Island prison for his alleged involvement in an attack on two police officers in Times Square. and that he received the support of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge, which assumed his bail of $15,000.

Rivas Figueroa faces formal charges of attempted murder and was prosecuted as an adult on two counts of attempted murder, as well as assault, attempted assault and illegal possession of weapons, according to police reports cited by the news channel. ABC7.
