Sports journalist Mubarak Al-Shehri sparked controversy with a tweet he posted on his official account on the social media platform “Twitter”, before the match between Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahly of Egypt in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.
The tweet included a picture of the Egyptian Al-Ahly president, Mahmoud Al-Khatib, before the match, and Al-Shehri commented on it, saying: “God brought them. I am still suffering from this picture, about which the press reported that the Egyptian Al-Ahly president, Mahmoud Al-Khatib, asked his team’s coach to show mercy to Al-Hilal and be content with just the four.”

Al-Shehri added: “I asked you, O Al-Ittihad stars, to change that image left behind by our representative. May God guide him in that match.”
Press reports had stated that Al-Khatib asked Egyptian Al-Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane not to put pressure on Al-Hilal Saudi Arabia in the match between the two teams in the group stage of the Club World Cup, taking into account the circumstances of the Saudi team, which was suffering from fatigue after a long trip.
Al-Shehri’s tweet caused mixed reactions among tweeters, as some considered that Al-Shehri exceeded his limits in criticizing the president of Al-Ahly of Egypt, while others considered that Al-Shehri expressed his personal opinion on Al-Khatib’s position.
