About fifteen American states allow weapons to be carried by school personnel, at the discretion of academic districts, in the context of an increase in school shootings in recent years.
Passed by the Tennessee House of Representatives on Tuesday, the law was approved by the Senate earlier in April. It must now be confirmed by Governor Bill Lee, who has already said he is “open” to the idea. The law sets several conditions: employees who want to carry a weapon must in particular complete 40 hours of “basic training in maintaining order in schools”.
In March 2023, an assailant opened fire at an elementary school in Nashville, killing three nine-year-old students and three staff before being shot dead by police. The Tennessee Legislature is controlled by Republicans, the right-wing party with the strongest supporters of gun rights.
Democratic elected officials were expelled after demonstrations calling for more gun restrictions following the Nashville school shooting. There are frequent killings in American schools, but federal institutions have little room for maneuver on the subject: each state can issue its own rules.
