Jakarta – The Leader of the Al-Zaytun Panji Gumilang Islamic Boarding School has found himself at the center of a controversy after making a number of controversial statements. However, Panji Gumilang’s family in Gresik has come forward to express their disbelief in the accusations that he has been spreading a cult.

Abdul Wahib, the youngest brother of Panji Gumilang, spoke out about the issue in their village in Siraman Hamlet, Sembung Anyar, Shaman District, Gresik, where the leaders of the Al-Zaytun Indramayu Islamic Boarding School were born. Wahib stated that his brother has been a victim of slander, and that the circulating video was deliberately edited to make it appear as though Panji Gumilang was spreading heretical teachings.

“I don’t believe the reports that are circulating, especially when Mas Panji is being accused of teaching heretical sects,” said Abdul Wahib in an interview with detikJatim on Saturday (24/6/2023). He further added that some of the reports circulating about his brother are untrue, and many videos about Panji have been edited and cut to misrepresent his teachings.

Wahib also shed light on Panji Gumilang’s passion for Islamic studies, which dates back to his childhood. While many of his peers were not interested in attending school, Panji chose a public school that focused on teaching Islam.
