Controversial Return of Bertrand Cantat with New Song L’Angle – Detroit’s Call for Financing and Public Reactions

News that has not gone unnoticed. Bertrand Cantat released this Wednesday, February 7 with Detroit, a group he co-founded in 2013, a new song called L’Angle, prelude to a new album. Deprived of a distributor and record company, the group launched a call for financing on the participative site Ulule, at the same time as the presentation of the new title.

This release comes more than 20 years after the death of Marie Trintignant, who died at the hands of Bertrand Cantat, who was then her companion, on August 1, 2003. Since her conviction, and her release in 2007 after having served more than half of his sentence, Bertrand Cantat attempted multiple returns to music. However, the former singer of Noir Désir struggles to perform without generating mobilizations, particularly from feminist collectives. Proof of this is that he was ousted from several festivals and in March 2020, and had to postpone his return to stage at Rocher de Palmer. It’s been four years since he last released a new song and this return was in the pipeline since the announcement published, already on social networks, by the group Detroit last year.

This Wednesday, February 7, Cyril Hanouna and his columnists returned to this musical return in Do not touch My TV!. Raymond Aabou felt that this return should not be legally prohibited but that the singer must have difficulty with his conscience. “We cannot ban this concert. But this guy disgusts me and I would have preferred him to keep a low profile, to do something else, now it’s over for me“, estimated the delivery driver.

The young journalist Radouan Kourak, new columnist since January 22, was even more virulent in these remarks: “I think this guy is shit, but I’m against censorship. If people want to go see it, they should go see it.ir,” he blurted.

For his part, Guillaume Genton was more measured in his remarks: “We can’t stop him from singing, we can’t stop people from going to see him, I think there are people who liked him before he committed this horror. There is a bit of hypocrisy, we tend to cancel people, to say that we no longer like what they do because they have committed a horror. For me, there are artists who have done horrible things and I still love their music“, he judged.
