Controversial Resignation: Bombay High Court Judge Facing Pressure over Acquittal of Saibaba and Other Bold Verdicts

Mumbai: Professor G.N., accused of Maoist links Bombay High Court Justice Rohit B. delivered bold verdicts including acquittal of Saibaba. Deo resigned in open court. The term was till December 4, 2025.

Deo, who was sitting on the Nagpur bench of the high court, announced his emotional resignation yesterday after recusing himself from all the listed cases. The resignation letter had already been submitted to the office. Lawyers and court staff said the reason for the resignation was that he had faced severe criticism and intense pressure from power centers over two landmark judgments he had issued recently.

Ex-Delhi University professor G.N., who was sentenced to life under the UAPA for alleged Maoist links. Saibaba was acquitted on October 14, 2022 by Justice Rohit B. Judged by Deo. Professor Saibaba, who is wheelchair-bound and 90 percent disabled, has been in jail for nine years. A bench of Justice Deo set aside the Sessions Court verdict in 2017, which sentenced him to life imprisonment, citing insufficient evidence under the UAPA. That judgment was passed by former Supreme Court Justice M.R. last April. Shah’s bench stayed. Another bench had ordered the High Court to decide the case.

On 26th of last month, Justice Deo Sto had passed a resolution authorizing the Maharashtra government to set aside the revenue department’s action punishing the contractors of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samriddhi Expressway for illegal mining. It was these two judgments that pressed him.

He said he has no grudge against anyone and regrets if he has hurt anyone. He even apologized for being harsh with the lawyers on some occasions. Former Advocate General of Maharashtra Government, Rohit Deo was appointed as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court on 5 June 2017. He became a permanent judge in 2019. He also held the post of Assistant Solicitor General representing the Central Government in the Nagpur Bench.
