Controversial Refereeing Decisions Deprive Liverpool of Valid Goal Against Tottenham: Gamal El-Sherif’s Analysis

Liverpool were deprived of a valid goal against Tottenham, and Gamal El-Sherif explains the details

The match between Tottenham and Liverpool, on Saturday, in the seventh week of the English Premier League, witnessed a major refereeing controversy, especially by the Liverpool team, after a goal by Colombian player Luis Diaz was canceled, as well as the expulsion of two of its players, causing it to lose the match with a score of 1-2.

Liverpool’s English player, Curtis Jones, was sent off in the first half after interfering with Malian Yves Bissouma. The referee warned him before the FAR room intervened to change the decision and then sent him off. Gamal Al-Sharif, arbitration expert at Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed, supported the referee’s decision.

The former international referee said about the case: “A clear expulsion due to violent play after he kicked the player on the lower leg using excessive force, which threatened the safety of the opposing player.”

The case of the expulsion of the Portuguese player Diogo Gota after being warned twice within two minutes was controversial, but Al-Sherif supported the referee’s decision regarding the two penalties as well, considering that the player deserved the expulsion.

Al-Sherif said about the first warning: “An obstruction from behind without wanting to compete for the ball, and the aim of it is to stop a promising attack by the opponent, and therefore the player’s warning was a sound decision.”

Regarding the second warning, the former international referee said: “The second warning was correct because the player obstructed his opponent after he passed him and he had an attack for his team and the goal was to stop the promising attack and therefore the referee’s decision was correct to announce the warning, which was the second card and it was natural for him to send the player off.”

Regarding Liverpool’s goal, which was canceled by the referee because Diaz was in an offside position, Al-Sherif considered that the mistake was a double one between the assistant referee and the “VAR” room, as the goal should have been counted. The shot sparked great controversy, considering that Liverpool would have advanced.

Al-Sherif said about the goal: “It seems clear that there is no offside when passing the ball. When Salah directed the ball to his colleague Luis Diaz, the left foot of the last defender was covering the attacker, and the defender moved to cause the attacker to be offside, but when passing the ball there was no player.” “Liverpool is offside, considering that the ruling should be made when passing and not when the ball arrives, and that is why the assistant referee’s decision was wrong to consider the Liverpool striker offside.”

He continued: “The mouse room had to intervene with its capabilities of replaying and setting lines, and to resolve the situation in favor of the striker who scored a goal, but it supported the referee’s decision or that some error had occurred and the video assistant referee was not able to control the situation, and thus wasted the opportunity to score.” Goal for Liverpool.
