Controversial Referee Performance and Frustration in Djurgården’s 0-4 Loss to Elfsborg

After the 4-0 loss against Elfsborg, Djurgården’s leaders and players were highly critical of their own performance at home at Tele2 Arena – and were impressed by the quality of the opponent. At the same time, several expressed great frustration with the judge Fredrik Klitte’s performance.

Elfsborg went into an important 2-0 lead as early as the 20th minute after being awarded a penalty when Rasmus Schüller tackled Johan Larsson. Shortly afterwards, Joel Asoro fell in a duel with Buhari Ibrahim, but then Klitte chose not to give Djurgården a penalty. Instead, Elfsborg made it 3-0 before the break.

– I think we should also have received a penalty. I’ve looked at it afterwards and he didn’t touch the ball for five cents. It’s sour, says Asoro.

The blue-striped team was frustrated with Klitte during the match.

– There were a lot of blowouts and I don’t know how many free kicks there were in the end. It was way too much. That kind of bothers. I think people even clashed with the referee a few times. It became sour (mood). It was difficult that we didn’t get much, says Asoro.

Djurgården’s midfield shadow Rasmus Schüller also got a warning in the second half which means he is suspended against Mjällby in the next Allsvenskan round.

Schüller reacted to receiving a free kick against him by striking out with his arms, and then he was awarded a yellow card. After the final whistle, the Finn is upset when he talks about the incident.

– I don’t know… I maybe reacted to the verdict, but I also reacted to the fact that I didn’t win a duel. I’m frustrated with myself. I think I should be allowed to show emotions that way, says Schüller.

He interpreted it as being directed at him?
– Yes, he interpreted it as a reaction against him. He can interpret it that way, but it’s unfortunate because now I’m suspended for a game because of it. It’s okay to be suspended in a game if I break a counter attack or do something tactically important for us. Now it’s a situation where I reacted to myself because it went against the grain.

– I thought I won a good duel and felt: “Damn”. And then I got a yellow card for that. It feels really stupid. Now I get to rest in a very important away match against Mjällby.

About Elfsborg’s punishment, he otherwise says:

– Maybe it’s a penalty but that’s where he (the referee) drew the line. In that case, we would have a penalty on Joel’s situation. I don’t want to get into the referee too much but if he sets that line we should have a penalty and then we might have been able to get something. It was perhaps our chance and when we didn’t get it, Elfsborg scored an incredible goal to make it 3-0. They almost punctured the game

However, Schüller is clear that Elfsborg’s victory is indisputable.

– It ended 0-4. We talked, we were excited, we were going to go in hard for the first five minutes and we ended up losing four duels straight away. We weren’t there. It’s not good. It’s a shame.

– Elfsborg played a very good and effective football match, and we were not there.

In the first half, Djurgården also wanted a red card on Elfsborg’s forward Per Frick, when he hit Hampus Finndell in the back of the head with his arm/elbow. Frick now says:

– I wanted to do a game-breaking thing and get a warning. Then maybe I was a little too harsh. I do not know. I have not seen the situation in hindsight. But the judge let me stay anyway.

– My feeling on the pitch was that I would tackle him to bring him down to prevent him from playing the ball forward. A classic football obstruction. My feeling the whole time was that I was going to get a warning, not that it was anything worse than that. Then I don’t know what it looked like or where I hit.
