Controversial Referee Decisions Dominate Bayern Munich vs Arsenal Champions League Quarter-Final Match

On Tuesday, Bayern Munich cruised against Arsenal (2-2) away from home in the first quarter-final meeting in the Champions League. The match was eventful, and contained several difficult decisions for Swedish head referee Glenn Nyberg.

In injury time, Bukayo Saka called for a penalty, and afterwards Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel is furious that the German club were not awarded a penalty midway through the second half.

In the 67th minute, Nyberg got the game going, and then Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya played the ball to teammate Gabriel Magalhaes, who was standing in the penalty area and picked up the ball with his hands, before restarting the game. Both Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala reacted at the same time and waved their hands out on the pitch.

Tuchel believes that it was a clear penalty to Bayern Munich.

– The referee made a big mistake. I know it was a crazy situation. They (David Raya) put the ball down, he (Glenn Nyberg) blew and the defender (Gabriel Magalhaes) took the ball with both hands,” Tuchel says according to Amazon Prime and continues:

– What makes us angry is the explanation out on the pitch. He told our players it was a “childish mistake” and didn’t want to give a penalty for it in a Champions League quarter-final. It’s terrible, a terrible explanation. “Child’s mistake”, “adult’s mistake”, whatever – we are angry because it was a huge decision against us.

Harry Kane is on the same track afterwards.

– We should have received a clear penalty when the referee blew his pipe, the goalkeeper passed the ball and Gabriel picked it up. It is the clearest punishment I have ever seen, he says according to Amazon Prime.

In TV4 Play’s Champions League studio, expert Albin Ekdal gives his view on the situation.

– If you’re going to be a rule rider and follow the rule book, then it should be an indirect free kick, but I think it’s liberating to let it go and drive on. Then I probably would have reacted like Kane (Harry) and Musiala (Jamal) to get myself advantages, says Ekdal in the studio.

Bayern Munich, who have had a tough season in the Bundesliga, next week host Arsenal in the return leg at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
