Controversial Referee Decision Sparks Heated Debate Between Dietmar Hamann and DFB Official

Berlin (dpa) – Angry about a referee’s decision at the Bundesliga game in Freiburg, TV expert Dietmar Hamann got into a war of words with DFB official Alex Feuerherdt. “If we don’t give a red card for something like that, then we can stop,” Hamann complained in the Sky studio on Saturday about a foul by Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo on Cristian Gamboa from VfL Bochum. When Feuerherdt, spokesman for DFB Schiri GmbH, defended Grifo’s yellow card, Hamann countered: “Alex, you turn it the way you need it.”

Referee Tobias Reichel decided when the Freiburg player was hit hard that Gamboa had not been hit in the ankle, but only on the side of the foot. “The hit pattern is actually a criterion that is important for the referees,” explained Feuerherdt. Hamann objected vehemently: “Don’t tell me about the hit pattern. That’s a red card.”

When Feuerherdt argued that Grifo had hit the edge of Gamboa’s shoe, Hamann continued to talk himself into a rage and said: “The shoe doesn’t go all the way to the shin.”

Shortly afterwards, the ex-national player even started general criticism. “At the end of the season the DFB statistics come back and they say: Once the video evidence made the wrong decision. There have already been ten situations this year where you made the wrong decision,” said Hamann.

Feuerherdt strongly contradicted this. He was surprised because he hadn’t been shown ten errors during previous TV broadcasts. “To be honest, I can’t understand the severity. This is not a decision that is 100-nil for Red,” said the DFB official.

Bochum’s coach Thomas Letsch had previously criticized the referee’s leniency. “I wonder if he has to break his foot before he gets red? Someone has to explain that to me,” said Letsch.
