Controversial Record: The Scandal Surrounding the Fastest Climber on Mount K2

Jakarta

Kristin Harila managed to ordain himself as the fastest climber to reach the top of Mount K2. However, there was a scandal that accompanied his success.

Harila confirmed the record for the fastest climber to the top of Mount K2 in Pakistan on July 27, 2023. Despite being the second highest mountain, it is said that the mountain with an altitude of 8,849 meters above sea level has the most difficult climbing route.

Kristin’s success in reaching the top of Mount K2 became the world’s spotlight. However, the climb comes at a cost. Porter Mohammed Hassan, one of the supporters of Kristin’s climb and his team, fell from a sheer cliff at an altitude of about 8,200 meters. Harila was accused of not caring about Hassan until she died.

Austrian climbers Wilhelm Steindl and Philip Flämig, who were on K2 the same day, said drone footage showed Harila and friends walking past the porter’s body without trying to save him.

“He was treated by one person while the others headed for the summit. In fact, there was no organized rescue operation even though there were Sherpas and guides at the location where it was possible to carry out the rescue,” Flamig said.

“Such conditions would not have happened in the Alps. He was treated like a second class human being. If he was a white man, he would have been rescued immediately. No one feels responsible. What happened is a disgrace. Meanwhile, one person is left for the record,” William added.

According to Steindl, who visited the porter’s family after descending the mountain, Hassan apparently lacked experience as a porter. He works to pay for the medical bills of his diabetic mother.

Harila rejected the accusations and insisted that his team did all they could to save Hassan.

“It’s not true we didn’t do anything to help him. We tried to bring him back in for an hour and a half and my cameraman stayed for the next hour to look after him,” said Harila.

“Given his condition, it was difficult to save him. He fell on the most dangerous part of the mountain, his path was limited by narrow roads and bad snow conditions,” he said.

Harila said that when he was found, Hassan was not wearing gloves or a jacket and did not appear to be being given oxygen.

K2 is considered one of the most difficult and deadliest peaks of the five highest mountains in the world. Data for 2018 shows more than a fifth of climbing attempts end in death. Experts say the topography on K2 is more difficult than on Everest. In addition, Mount K2 is prone to landslides.
