The Prime Minister (PM) of the Netherlands Mark Rutte has apologized for the extreme and systematic violence during Indonesia’s war of independence in 1945-1950. However, members of parliament Dutch, Geert Wilders criticized the Dutch government’s apology.
The right-wing politician considered the apology inappropriate because the Dutch also suffered a lot during Indonesia’s war of independence. In fact, according to him, Indonesia should apologize to the Netherlands.
“Where is the apology from the Indonesian side for their violence against the Dutch and the Bersiap? Punishing the Dutch soldiers is falsifying history. They are heroes. We must stand behind our veterans. Apologies are inappropriate,” the controversial politician tweeted in Dutch on Monday. his personal Twitter account @geertwilderspvv, Saturday (19/2/2022).
So far, the period 1945-1947 in Indonesia was known as the Dutch Aggression. Temporary Dutch remembers that period as the ‘Preparing Period’, during which some in the country say many of its soldiers died during that period.
Previously, PM Mark Rutte apologized for the extreme violence during Indonesia’s war of independence. The apology was delivered after Dutch research showed the Dutch army carried out extreme violence against the Indonesian people in the 1945-1950 war.
