How cruel the scenario was on the synthetic pitch at the Stade de Reims on Saturday. The Guingampaises flexed their muscles and thought they would come back from Champagne with a point in their bag. But the referees awarded a penalty for a difficult-to-see fault at the very end of the match.
“I don’t have many words, other than injustice. I don’t see how we can call a penalty for this action. It’s so hard for the players who gave everything and who deserved a completely different fate,” summed up Costa Rican coach Mathieu Rufié, very bitterly.
If the EAG could also regret the missed lob from Traoré (12′) for one of its only real opportunity, losing on such a twist of fate left the Guingampaises with a look full of sadness. While Stade de Reims took advantage of this opportunity to climb into the Top 4, Guingamp sees the red zone getting closer with Lille only one point away. The trip to Bordeaux, the red lantern, in two weeks will clearly be worth its weight in gold.
