The ‘red devils’ beat Wolverhampton by 1-0 at home in the opening round of the Premier League, in a game marked by an unmarked penalty in favor of the visitors.
The Premier League decided to punish three members of the refereeing team that was present last Monday at Old Trafford to direct Manchester United-Wolverhampton, a match related to the opening day of the English league.
Head referee Simon Hooper, as well as Michael Salisbury (video referee) and Richard West (assistant video referee) were removed from the appointments for round two of the championship.
At the basis of this punishment is an unmarked penalty in favor of Wolves in the 95th minute. After Varane had scored the only goal of the game, goalkeeper Onana collided with Kaladzic in the small area, an infraction that went unnoticed by both the main referee and the VAR.
At the end of the match Gary O’Neill, coach of Wolverhampton, revealed that he had received an apology from John Moss, leader of the Premier League Referees Committee.
“He told me that it was an obvious penalty and that it should have been called. He had fair play and apologized”, said the coach.
One of the players involved in the move, goalkeeper André Onana, considered that it was a normal move and that he always believed that a penalty would not be awarded.
It was a normal contact, between two ‘big’ players. Nothing happened. I always remained confident that nothing would be reported”, said the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
