Controversial North Sea Oil Field Project Faces Opposition and Deferral to 2026

Owners Equinor and Ithaca Energy may develop the field and therefore start production. It is expected that oil and gas will not be pumped until 2026.

The plans have encountered a lot of criticism due to their impact on the climate. Several British MPs last month called on then British Energy Minister Grant Shapps not to approve the project.

The British government wants to become less dependent on energy imports and in July promised “hundreds” of new licenses for the extraction of oil and natural gas in the North Sea.

According to Equinor and Ithaca Energy, the field could account for 8 percent of the UK’s oil production between 2026 and 2030 if it starts up in 2026.
