Ethiopia reported on Sunday that the reservoir of the controversial dam on the Nile has been filled. The country considers this dam crucial for stimulating the economy, but Egypt and Sudan see the project as a serious threat to their water supply.
Ethiopia announced on Sunday that the fourth and final phase of filling the reservoir has been completed. The dam is part of a hydroelectric power station on the Blue Nile, which originates in Ethiopia.
Construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) started in 2011 and cost approximately 3.75 billion euros. The dam is seen as crucial to boost Ethiopia’s economic development. The country hopes to become Africa’s largest energy exporter, partly thanks to GERD, which has an expected capacity of more than 6,000 megawatts.
The project is receiving less enthusiasm in neighboring Sudan and Egypt, through which the Nile also flows. These countries fear that the dam poses a threat to their water supply and have therefore opposed the project for years.
The three countries have been negotiating the project for years. Those negotiations were suspended in 2021, but recently resumed. Now they are on the line again. Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday called the filling of the Nile Dam reservoir “illegal”.
