Controversial New York City Rule Requires Asylum Seekers to Leave Shelters in 60 Days: Investigation Launched

The rule announced by New York City requiring families of asylum seekers in municipal shelters, to leave these temporary lodgings within 60 days. A measure that continues to “trigger” extreme polarization: A group of defenders describe the action as “cruel and inhuman”. And others interpret it as a “logical output” to the migration crisis.

The strategy drawn up to decongest the already collapsed shelter system is now the target of an investigation by the municipal comptroller, Brad Landerwho since the rule was announced last October, has tried to fight it.

This week, Lander announced the launch of a online form which will serve as a digital platform to share ideas and observations, on the impacts of the Adams Administration’s imposition of this time limit on shelters.

In hundreds of cases, the municipality has financed emergency hotel accommodation, food and medical services for more than a year for families who have crossed the southern border of Mexico. The municipal government’s argument is that is “helping and motivating” thousands of people to follow their path to financial independence.

The virtual form, open to those affected by these measures, advocacy groups and community organizations, is found in the section “Accounting for services for asylum seekers” of the Comptroller’s Office website.

“While we investigate the real effects of this rule, It is vital to understand the impact on the lives of families. We open the opportunity to collect feedback from asylum seekers themselves and from communities, who are witnesses of the day-to-day experience of these people”, ponders Lander.

Anonymous information

Those interested in sharing their opinions and experiences, They can submit information anonymously, as no personal identification is required.

The Comptroller’s Office will not voluntarily disclose the information contained in this form and will not be included no identifying information on future reports.

This appeal is another step by Comptroller Lander, who on January 9 initiated an investigation on the City’s handling of the 60-day ruleexpressing concerns about the fiscal implications and impacts on the procedures for work authorizations, immigration adjustments and the general costs associated with the uprooting of families.

Families who receive this notice should find alternative shelter, which may be available in another county, which could cause consequences such as children’s access to the schools where they are enrolled.

The guarantor of municipal finances demanded in an open letter that the details of this policy be explained to him, which in his opinion, ““They have been poorly communicated, because we are not clear about the protocols used to implement it.”

Immigrants who receive notification are asked to check in at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan, the city’s main admission center for newly arrived immigrants, who have welcomed into the normal local hostel.

“Many families came blindly, following the propaganda that you can live in a shelter as long as you want. And now they find themselves trapped in the most expensive city in the world. But the normal thing is that they set deadlines. Even your close family, when they help you, tell you: “You can only stay for a week!” relates the Ecuadorian immigrant, José Sánchez. 35 years old, who spent a couple of days in a shelter in the Big Apple, until it reached its final destination, which was Long Island.

The City: “It is working”

Municipal sources indicated to El Diario that they are open to any research and new ideas to ratify the effectiveness of this rule. Even more so, when it is fully demonstrable that with the support of municipal agencies, 60% of the people who have arrived since spring 2022 requesting shelter, They have already taken the “next step to their journey.”

More of 172,400 immigrants have gone through the immigration admission system created as part of this emergency. There are currently more than 67,500 people in City-funded shelters, meaning almost 105,000 have moved oneither because they have moved to other cities or because they have been able to rent their spaces.

In his last conference open to the media, Mayor Adams stressed that the ’60 day rule’ “it is working, since unlike other cities, no child or family sleeps on the streets of New York City.

“We have the audacity to tell single people, within 30 days you have to be self-sufficient, Because we can’t hold you forever.”he noted.

The data:

  • 80% of single adults After they were notified that they had to leave some emergency accommodation, they were able to take the step towards independence.
