Controversial Life of Zhang Xinyang: From Child Genius to Dependence

Jakarta

A man named Zhang Xinyang once amazed the public with his above average intelligence. At that time, he started attending college at the age of 10 and even received a PhD six years later majoring in Applied Mathematics. Now Zhang is 28 years old. But his achievements are no longer a topic of discussion and are even said to still depend on his parents.

Zhang Xinyang admitted that his daily life now is just sitting around and doing nothing. This is even said to be the key to his happiness. Even though Zhang was previously known as a genius child who was China’s youngest student. He also became the youngest PhD graduate at Beihang University, one of the best universities in Beijing.

After graduating from university, it seems that Zhang didn’t do much. He even caused controversy when he asked his parents, who come from a small town in Liaoning Province, to buy him a residence in Beijing worth 2 million yuan (Rp. 4.3 billion). If his request was rejected, the man threatened to leave his Masters studies and refused the PhD offer.

“Buy an apartment, find a good job, and become a Beijing resident. You want me to live in Beijing more than anyone else so you have to try harder (to fulfill his wish),” Zhang told his parents.

Reported by CCTV, Zhang’s parents finally complied with their son’s wishes even though they had to lie. It turns out they didn’t buy but only rented for a while. Zhang finally finished his studies and became a lecturer in the Ningxia Hui area but quit two years later.

After going through his time as a child genius, now Zhang’s mindset towards success has changed. No longer ambitious to be successful in the capital, he now lives simply, doesn’t have a permanent job, and has little money in his account. Zhang reportedly rented an apartment in Shanghai while working freelance and still received financial support from his parents.

“They owe me. The apartment they never bought for me is now worth more than 10 million yuan (Rp. 21 billion),” said Zhang, who blamed his parents.

Zhang Xinyang’s change in attitude and ‘fall’ became the topic of discussion among netizens. Even though his statement was surprising and seemed disrespectful, many people actually blamed his father and mother for encouraging Zhang to pursue education as a child.

“His parents were obsessed with making a child prodigy and finally Zhang compensated for the loss of childhood in other ways,” “He didn’t suddenly become an adult who undermined his parents,” “He had often tried to rebel but failed,” wrote netizens on Weibo.
