Controversial Japanese Man Lives with Four Wives and Children, Sparking Debate in Japan

The media recently published a controversial story about a 35-year-old man, who claims to be married to four women, including three young children, even though he has not worked for more than a decade.

Japanese Ryota Watanabe (35 years old) from Sapporo, on the island of Hokkaido, caused a sensation overnight in his country because of his unconventional lifestyle.

Abema Prime revealed that the man lives with three of his four wives – who get along well with each other – and depends on them for most of the family’s financial needs, as he has not worked for the past 10 years.

The story of the man and his wives sparked controversy in Japan, where polygamy is officially prohibited.

Watanabe assured Abema TV that he “loves them all equally.”

The unemployed man lives with three of his wives, all of whom occupy a bedroom with their children. His first wife is 27 years old, while his second and third are 24 and 22 years old, respectively. While he has a two-year-old child and a one-year-old child from his first wife, his second wife gave birth to a five-month-old child. The man did not specify why his fourth wife lived separately, but his partners confirmed that they had another “sister wife.”

Watanabe’s four wives said they knew from the beginning that they would not be his only partner and that he was unemployed, but they had no problem with either fact. They work together to cover the family’s monthly expenses of about 850,000 yen ($5,860), while Ryota takes care of the household chores, an unusual arrangement, especially for Japan’s generally patriarchal society.

Ryota does not see a problem with polygamy and describes them as “less than family, but more than friends,” pointing out that none of his women seem to have a problem. On the contrary, his wives praised his charm and strength, and unanimously expressed their support for him.

When asked how the polygamous family planned to explain their living arrangements to their children, Ryouta said they would find out for themselves. While one of his wives thought that they would try to explain to them that not all families are the same so that they could grow up without prejudice.
