The Romanian court has approved the British request for the extradition of controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan. The court has also ordered that they be released for now.
The brothers were arrested last night. The United Kingdom had issued an arrest warrant and requested their extradition following allegations of sexual abuse from 2012 to 2015. Andrew and Tristan Tate dispute all allegations.
The country will only extradite the brothers once a court case in Romania has been completed. There is a case against the pair for rape and human trafficking.
The two are accused of being part of a criminal organization. They are allegedly involved in human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of women in Romania and other countries, including England. The brothers also refute these accusations.
House arrest
Together with two others, Tate and his brother were arrested near the capital Bucharest in December 2022. After three months they were placed under house arrest, but in August the judge decided that he could travel freely in Romania pending the trial. He was not allowed to leave the country.
Tate is especially popular on social media among young men. In 2022, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube banned his accounts. According to Meta, the parent company of the first two, Tate had violated the house rules. Yet his ideas remain popular among young people.
In 2022, the NOS discussed the popularity of Tate with a Tate supporter and someone who was previously a supporter of the influencer:
